What does Mr Whippy (the ice cream van man) do in winter?
One of life’s great mysteries.
What does Mr Whippy (the ice cream van man) do in winter?
One of life’s great mysteries.
At last count I think 17 was the number of times I’ve visited Esperance. But I’ve never seen this delapidated old jetty:
I took a walk this afternoon along Castletown Quays to the Tanker Jetty. It was about a 6.5km roundtrip, and now my toe hurts?!
It was so incredibly windy I didn’t make it to the end of the Jetty.
The Jetty is 80 years old and definitely won’t last another 80.
I saw these two hanging out:
When I got home I attempted to make friends with the resident bird (failed) and crumbed and cooked some local fish left to me by the owners of the house I’m looking after (not a failure).
What’s new?
I am in back in Esperance again. I organised to work out of the office here while I housesit for three weeks. Genius plan. I arrived yesterday and the weather has been on point. $10 says it turns just in time for the weekend.
Today I finished work, drove straight to Twilight Beach and sat on a rock for a while. When it got too windy I moved to the sand.
The people whose house I’m minding have an amazing veggie patch, chickens that lay 3 eggs a day and a chubby staffy who went nuts when I arrived home today. Adorable. They also have a grumpy bird who tries to bite me. He’ll warm up.
I listened to Serial on the drive down. I listened to the first episode months ago and then forgot to keep going. It’s really great! Do you listen to it? Who do you think is the murderer?
This evening I watched the first ep of season 4 of Girls. It felt like it was over in 5 minutes! Also pretty much everything was in the trailer… But I still loved it. Lena Dunham is the best.
Well, that’s it for this weirdly disjointed blog post. Be good.
I haven’t taken any holidays over the Christmas New Year period, but copious public holidays have allowed for some delightfully lazy days. Although they have done nothing to quash my social media induced beach holiday envy.
Anyway.
Have baked:
A tray of pumpkin, capsicum, onion and walnuts with a sprinkling of garlic, basil and cinnamon. Goes excellently in salads and wraps, in pasta and atop cous cous and pizza.
The latter demonstrated here:
The pink frangipanis are in bloom in my backyard:
Lets go in for a closer look:
As two of my New Years Resolutions are to a) de-clutter and b) boost my savings account I took a pile of clothes to my friends’ boutique that does consignment sales:
I did the same thing before Christmas and was rewarded $250 for my unwanted items and the minimal effort of dropping them off at the shop. Thanks Jo!
Actioned these pancakes, which I feel deserve more air time:
I posted the recipe yesterday.
I also actioned a low key BBQ among a few friends and discovered the perfect summer punch concoction. Recipe to come.
And importantly:
A hammock has been purchased. A two person hammock. But if you’re in it alone you can lie sideways as pictured above, which is the final word in comfort. I can’t believe it took me this long to invest in a hammock.
I also discovered a most excellent blog called Have Some Decorum, which is written by a fabulous sassy woman living in Paris who happens to be paralysed from the neck down due to ALS. Ellie used to be a interior designer with a shop in Santa Barbara, and lived in NYC before Paris. She is amazingly eccentric and recently bought a piece of Napoleon Bonaparte’s wallpaper in an antique sale. I love her. You must go and read her entire back catalogue now. I also took inspiration from the minimalism and cheap groceries on the Gardener’s Cottage. Also the old California wedding that was organised in two weeks was incredible. That would be the only way to endure the customs that come with matrimony, such a ghastly business (the organising and expense I mean).
For many, today will be the first day back at work for 2015. Some may experience post holiday blues. Suffer in your jocks I say. I will miss an empty office.
In a week I’m heading south to Esperance for three weeks. I will work out of the office there and aim to get to the beach every day after work. Cue excitement.
Have you had a break? Make me jealous with your tales of beaches and exotic locales.
Whisk one egg with a 1+1/4 cup of buttermilk. Add the mixture to 1 cup of self raising flour, 1/4 cup of caster sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. Stir.
Ladle a spoonful into a frying pan and flip when bubbly. Voila.
It’s all in the quarter quantities 😉 Not really. Buttermilk just seems to make the lightest and fluffiest pancakes in all the land.
Enjoy with Canadian maple syrup, avoid inferior imitations.
Hope you had a great weekend.
2014 has been a pretty great year. One of the best parts of having a blog is that it’s a convenient photo diary to look back on, in fact it makes it hard to pick out the best times. I’ve had so many amazing times in 2014, and some less amazing ones, but these are the highlights that stand out:
Hosted my first live radio show
I still remember what was going through my mind seconds before my first show: ‘Why did I agree to do this?! What is wrong with me?! As soon as this is over I’m never doing this again. EVER.’ But then I loved it. It’s still terrifying though.
Snorkelled on the Ningaloo Reef
There is a reason this place is world heritage listed. I took lots of bad underwater photos of fish which you can see here, here, here or here.
Visited Tasmania for the first time
Which I loved! We saw snow in the north and ate delicious things in Hobart.
Attended my first arts conference as a delegate
I was part of the Regional Arts Australia Summit Young Reference Group that executed the Humans of the Summit project, the Couch Fort and sat on panels (scary). I also got to shave the side of a strangers head, see amazing acrobats, fire performers and make amazing friends.
Moved into a house with a white picket fence
And found out about the interesting character that lived there in 1937. See the cute inside here.
Had two recipes printed in a book
Cheesecakes! Obviously. See more here.
Met this guy
And as always, had lots of amazing times with lots of amazing people:
At the Goldfields Children Charity Ball:
At the Easter Feaster.
At the Nullarbor Muster.
At Lauren’s circus themed 30th.
Camping at Lake Ballard .
With my darling Melbourne girls and family:
Celebrating Dad’s 60th.
At Kalgoorlie cocktail parties
And the Kalgoorlie Cup:
In Bali.
I even made a video!
At our Cowboys & Indians housewarming party:
And more recently over Christmas.
Thanks everyone who made 2014 so special. I’m looking forward to seeing what 2015 brings.
I had a delightfully lazy Christmas morning opening gifts, eating smoked salmon and speaking with family and friends while Love Actually played in the background.
At noon I packed my car with decorations, gifts, a cheesecake and an Esky (cooler for those who aren’t Australian) and headed off to Anthea and Scot’s place. I was in charge of table settings:
Scot whipped us up a couple of rounds of Singapore Slings:
And after a little while lunch was ready:
We piled our plates high with two kinds of ham, turkey, a ‘turporducken’ (a chicken inside a duck, inside a size 50 semi boneless turkey with ground pork as stuffing AND pork belly in there somehow), potato bake, cauliflower cheese, tomatoes, beans, more potatoes and a pesto pasta salad.
I ate myself into something beyond a food coma. As we sat there digesting, one little artist went to work making us all our own Christmas signs.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m super full I like to engage in activities that involve jumping onto my bloated stomach and sliding along the ground. So it was time to bust out the slip and slide!
Which was soon invaded by the adults.
I opted to stay dry, at least on the outside, and dug around in the Esky for my bottle of festive looking Chandon.
They should make the bottles like this all the time.
Present time!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Dave look so excited:
Pudding time!
There were also raspberry tarts and a delicious Baileys chocolate roulade made by Lecki. I probably say this every year but I don’t think I’ve ever felt more full in my life. I had to lie down. And then go home to bed at about 9pm. What a glutton. I guess that’s what Christmas is about. How was your Christmas?
Eat. Drink. Feel full. Repeat. That’s how the last four days have been.
It all kicked off on Christmas Eve with Lauren and Dave’s cocktail party.
The dining room table was like a battleground of spirits. With a plate of Lauren’s delicious home made gingerbread thrown in for good measure.
A team of dedicated mixologists worked hard in the dining room to circulate weird and wonderful cocktails among the party goers. The worst of which was a small step up form Listerine and the best, an orangey Christmassy Fireball concoction.
After some drinks we all tottered off home as jolly as the big man in red himself. It was a fabulous prelude to Christmas Day. Thanks for having us!
We made it! Work is done, shops are shut, I couldn’t do anything more if I wanted to. My chocolate gingerbread cheesecake is in the oven (and smells divine! recipe here):
the blinis for tonight are done:
And now I’m sitting on the couch, listening to Michael Buble (not even ashamed) and drinking a glass of sparkling wine from one of the coupe glasses I bought from the op-shop this week:
And the delightful thing is that my wonderful friends and family have been so concerned about me being in Kalgoorlie and alone on Christmas morning, that as a result there are a ridiculous number of presents under the tree with my name on them. I don’t think I’ve had so many in my adult life. My Mum even sent the stocking I’ve had since I was two so I wouldn’t miss out. Bless.
I need to go and get dolled up for a cocktail party tonight at Lauren and Dave’s house, the black strapless Natasha Gan LBD I bought in Seminyak is having its maiden voyage. I hope you have a wonderful and safe Christmas, and enjoy lots of good food with people you love. To all the people I love who I won’t see this year, I miss you and hope you’re all well and I will see you next year!
