A visit to Fossick Handmade

Tucked away behind the main street of Kalgoorlie is a little haven of art, craft, jewellery and fashion known as Fossick Handmade. Part gallery, part shop, Fossick provides hours of browsing (and buying) delight bound to make even the most punctual employee late back from lunch.

With a decidedly retro vibe, the shop has regular turnover of stock from both local and interstate designers and artists. My favourite at the moment has to be the collection of creative and quirky spoon jewellery (ring, pictured above). There is also a great selection of handmade greeting cards, perfect for when a mass produced Hallmark option just won’t suffice.

If you find yourself in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, a visit to Fossick Handmade at 93 Egan Street is an absolute must.

An entirely thrifted outfit*

*Except for the shoes.

Despite the amount of second-hand shopping I do, I’ve never been able to buy shoes. I put this down to my disappointingly large shoe size. I bought this jacket from the Salvos Store yesterday. Quite often I get dressed and realise everything but my shoes (and underwear) used to belong to a stranger.

This happened today.

Are you a second-hand shopper?

DIY Tribal Necklaces

Some inspiration from Honestly WTF

I made these tribal necklaces ages ago, but forgot to post them. I got the tutorial from I Spy DIY . First you will need rope, chain, lobster clips, colourful thread, beads and other decorative hardware & nuts. Oh and masking tape. And a hot glue gun.

First, cut the rope into your desired necklace length. Tape the ends of the rope with the masking tape to stop them fraying. Then tie the first colour of thread around the rope and continue to wrap for as long as you want.

To change colours simply tie the next colour onto the previous ones and continue wrapping, creating whatever pattern you like.

When you’ve covered the entire length of the rope, secure the thread with a knot. Then cut the ends off (leaving a little tape), and glue gun a nut to either end. Glue a section of chain into the nuts and attach a lobster clip to one of the chains.

And you’re done!

My apologies for the surly photo. It was the best I could do given my level of sleep deprivation over the weekend!

Travel Tuesday: Chicago

With all this talk of Chicago, I thought it only appropriate to feature Chi-Town in this weeks Travel Tuesday (which has been absent for a while).

I had the pleasure of spending time in the Windy City back in 2010 with my good friend Kate. We arrived in Chicago a tad weary after three nights in Las Vegas, but were keen to explore the city we had come to love from various movies (Chicago, High Fidelity, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, My Best Friends Wedding).

No visit is complete without a trip to the Art Institute of Chicago. This is home to some of my favourite paintings, including American Gothic (used in the opening sequence of Desperate Housewives!) and Nighthawks (frequently referenced in pop culture, including The Simpsons).

Millenium Park is home to the famous and much-loved Bean (actually called Cloud Gate).  It’s difficult to explain why The Bean is so mesmerising. It just is.

Eventually, the sun came out. Which was perfect for strolling along the banks of Lake Michigan, which is so vast it looks like the ocean.

One of the best things about Chicago was the food. Deep dish pizza is an absolute must. Even Kate, who is both lactose and gluten intolerant, forced some down!

The sandwiches are also great. But really, anything with that much pastrami is bound to be excellent.

One of the best things about our visit was that it happened to coincide with Taste of Chicago, the world’s largest food festival. I’m not sure I’ve ever been surrounded by so many people. And so much food.

Chicago dog, churro and dumpling. Trying to choose what to eat was second toughest task I’ve ever completed (first was trying to find a place to sit and eat at the festival).

Such an amazing city. I can’t wait to go back.

And all that jazz

Hello friends and foes!

I have loved the musical Chicago for as long as I can remember. I love the movie. I loved the time I saw on Broadway. I love the city. I love the costumes. The music. The songs. The story and everything about the roaring twenties.

So it’s only natural that when I found out the Goldfields Repertory Club were putting on Chicago, I would go and audition. And I did. And opening night is tomorrow! I play Mona, loveable jailbird who plugs her boyfriend for jazzin’ around. He had it coming.

I have a new found respect for the ladies of the 1920s. Those hairstyles require a serious amount of effort (and enough hairspray to make a sizeable dent in the ozone layer). Here are a few of my attempts:

Seen enough of my face?! I bet you have. These styles look reasonable in the before photos, but after a bit of shaking around on stage they look like a hot mess. Gravity is a problem when tucking one’s hair into a bob.

Anyway, wish me luck! I’ll be back soon with tales of my travels x

Blogging from the beach

Hello friends and lovers,

I am coming to you from a banana lounge on Banje Beach in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Benny the waiter just handed me my second strawberry daiquiri as waves lap the pebbled shore at my toes. If I wasn’t me, I hate me.

Much like Venice, Dubrovnik’s charm is interrupted only by the pensioner cruise set, who clog the city walls with their fanny packs and visors. Like the Atlantic City of the Adriatic, if you will. One can find solace on the city walls (those steps aren’t hip replacement-friendly) or on the beaches.

If the weather wasn’t due to turn on the day we leave I’m almost certain my seat on EasyJet’s 10:30am flight London Stanstead would be empty.

Never want to go home.

Sincerely,

A self indulgent blogger

London according to my iphone

20120510-190606.jpg

This is my first time blogging from my iPhone, so prepare your brace position for technical difficulties galore!
Here are some happy snaps of my week in London last week.

It was great to catch up with family, old friends and new friends. I also did some fairly serious shopping. Hopefully will be back very soon.

No Blogger is an Island

Blogging isn’t a lonely existence. Through my humble corner of the internet I have ‘met’ some lovely and talented ladies. Our little community is so supportive, quick to compliment and even quicker to pick you up when you are down. Hardly the trolls you constantly hear about, leaving behind them a wake of negativity and hatred in the form of blog comments.

Recently, the effervescent Rosemary from Lashes & Lattes sent me a package with some things she thought I would love. Have you heard of anything so sweet? Not because she wanted the credit, or something in return, but because she was out shopping and saw some things I’d enjoy (including the earrings I’m wearing in this pic – love them!).

The internet is the best.

Neon on the way

Whoops. ASOS must have hacked my bank account and purchased this blazer…. Damn.

I hate when that happens.

The kindness of strangers

Over the weekend my fellow journos Kara, Gloria and I headed to Rawlinna (just over 1000 kilometres east of Perth) for the annual Nullarbor Muster. It’s a big rodeo on the edge of the Nullarbor (aka the middle of nowhere) and getting there involves a long drive along the unsealed Trans Access Road.

After we arrived we realised we had not one but two flat tyres. Thankfully this was quickly remedied by some helpful Muster-goers. We thought our dramas were over but the next day we had a car accident which left our car un-drivable. Thankfully no one was hurt.

I was blown away by all the people who stopped to help. The man who moved the car off the road and disconnected the engine. The woman who comforted me through my shock-induced rage. And the people who gave us water and offered up their food.

We made it back to Kalgoorlie thanks to a convey of cowboys we befriended the day before. They unloaded our car, loaded our stuff into their utes and off we went.

People are amazing.

Despite the car trouble the Muster was such an amazing experience.
