30 things I’ve thrown out recently

IMG_3525

Destined for the thrift shop… Why did I ever think a neon perspex clutch would be cool?!

A little while ago I blogged about minimalism and how it spoke to me. Well it’s speaking even louder now that I’m leaving behind all my possessions to travel. I am getting rid of just about everything I own, either selling it, giving it away/to charities or throwing it out. I have two 23kg bags to take home on the plane to Melbourne and that’s it. Just me plus 46kg, which actually seems like a lot when I put it that way…

If you are on your own quest to live with less (perhaps in a slightly less drastic fashion than me) here are 30 things I promise you won’t miss:

1. Bank statements
2. Old nail polishes
3. Christmas and birthday cards
4. Pajamas you never wear
5. Shoes you are never getting re-soled
6. All those sad single socks
7. Paid bills
8. Dead pens
9. Half finished powder compacts
10. Crazy coloured lipsticks
11. Outdated medical scripts
12. Faded black singlet tops
13. Clothes that are too small
14. Clothes that are too big
15. Clothes you bought from Target that fit awkwardly
16. Books that hold no sentimental value
17. Postcards
18. Ticket stubs for the scrapbook you are never making
19. Costume jewellery you don’t wear
20. Itchy scarves
21. Saggy swimwear
22. Neon workout clothes
23. Receipts you don’t need
24. Sad bras and underwear
25. Mini hotel/airline toiletries
26. Coat hangers
27. Stained clothes
28. The USB cables for cameras and phones you no longer own
29. Bags and clutches you never use
30. Old shopping bags

Warning: getting rid of things becomes seriously addictive.

Planning our USA road trip

$_3

We have finally made some concrete plans for the USA leg of our trip, which given we’ll be there in a month and a half is quite the relief!

On May 15 we fly from Melbourne to Los Angeles.

For three months from the end of May/start of June we will be driving up the west coast of America and into Canada to Vancouver, then we will head east and stop in Calgary in time for the Calgary Stampede (I hope!). Then the plan is to drive south through Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona back to LA.

From there we are flying to Dallas (Texas! SO excited!) at the start of September and have one month to get to Fort Lauderdale via New Orleans and ALL the southern BBQ restaurants along the way.

On October 1 we fly from Fort Lauderdale to Lima, Peru and do Machu Picchu. Then I don’t know. We plan on doing much of South America before flying back to east coast USA.

If you have recommendations for any of these places please throw them my way! The Calgary Stampede was a recommendation from my friend Chelsea and given my affinity for rodeos, I’m VERY excited!

What did you have for breakfast?

IMG_1663

I’ve always been weirdly voyeuristic about peoples’ morning routines. I have no idea why but I remember as a kid, thoroughly enjoying a random segment on Sesame Street that involved two friends getting ready for their day ahead. I think I mostly just loved the corn rows the mom plaited into their hair, but ever since then it’s stuck with me.

– As a teenager I remember being slightly horrified when I stayed over at a friend’s house and she had toast for breakfast, on her birthday. Clearly I thought french toast or pancakes were part of everyone’s birthday morning routine.

– I once had a boyfriend who insisted you had to be showered and dressed before breakfast. Similarly, I have relatives who believe shoes are mandatory at the breakfast table.

– I had a housemate who would burn his toast every morning. Or overcook it. Either way the smell would hit me in the face every time I got out of the shower.

– Working in media, it’s common to ask someone what they had for breakfast so you can do a levels check (ensure the microphone is loud enough). The answers fascinate me. Sometimes more than anything said in the actual interview.

It’s as though everyone has this secret routine of complex rituals they perform every morning that we never talk about. All of a sudden people magically appear at school or work, ready to go. But what happens before then?! Call me strange, but I’m curious; what did you have for breakfast? Do you have the same thing every day? Do you drink coffee or tea? Do you shower or have breakfast first? How do you get to work?

During the week I shower first at about 7am except on Wednesdays and Fridays when I do a 6am spin class. Getting dressed can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes depending on what’s clean/what I inexplicably hate the thought of wearing that day.

I apply makeup and then drive to work. I really should walk… I have microwave porridge and tea while I check my emails at my desk. I have the same breakfast for months until I suddenly tire of it. The yoghurt/frozen berry/strawberry combo pictured above was my breakfast for almost 6 months last year. And then strawberries got too expensive.

So tell me, what’s your morning routine? Apparently Vogue editor Anna Wintour starts her day at 5:45am with an hour of tennis.

Rocky road cake topping

IMG_3350

This is a really easy way to make any cake look good ridiculously indulgent and over the top. It comes from this recipe for caramel rocky road cake , which looks amazing, but who has time to bake four cakes?! I wanted an impressive looking cake for my friend Emily’s birthday last week, so I took the rocky road cake topping from the link above and added it to a mud cake.

IMG_3347

All I did was arrange mini flake bars, mars bars and marshmallows on the cake before drizzling (store bought) salted caramel sauce all over the chocolate mountain. I made it on Thursday night, covered it and when I lifted the cover off on Friday morning the smell of caramel literally smacked me in the face. It was aaaaaamazing.

IMG_3355

I love how the caramel has oozed out of the mars bars.

IMG_3362

I think this topping would look even better on a white frosted vanilla cake. Next time!

Goldfields Children Charity Ball 2015

On Saturday evening I married my housemate and bestie Bec in a small, intimate backyard wedding. My bridesmaids wore red. Kidding! But doesn’t it look like that’s what’s happening in this photo:

IMG_3409

It really does! Anyway, Saturday night was the annual Goldfields Children Charity Ball aka the biggest event on Kalgoorlie’s illustrious social calendar. So we got frocked up:

IMG_4785

I applied some hand bling from Lovisa that broke twice before the night got started, an ultimate lesson of ‘you get what you paid for’.

IMG_4790

It was pretty though.

We had pre drinks at Sarah’s house this year. Sarah is in the red dress in the middle.

Bec’s actual date was her boyfriend Scott, not me.

Jordan and Maitlin made the trip from Perth.

And I got captured in some unflattering photos.

IMG_3387

I blame Mike.

IMG_3391

That’s better.

IMG_3402

That loving gaze.

IMG_3416

Blue steel or just a bad mood? Who knows?

IMG_3422

IMG_3413

One last group shot

The theme for this year’s ball was ‘Glisten’ which I accurately guessed was a nod to Frozen. Every second year the ball goes all out with a fun theme (remember last year was Willy Wonka?) and every other year it’s a classy, more understated theme.

IMG_1847

It was nice, very blue.

IMG_1850

The entree wasn’t great. Some kind of pork terrine.

IMG_1854

At some point during the evening I started to talk to Bec and Jordan about my impending farewell party and all the good times and what I should mention in my speech. Bad idea! It made me very sad.

IMG_1855

These two.

IMG_1866

IMG_1863

IMG_1869

Dinner was far superior to entree. You can’t really go wrong with eye fillet now, can you?

IMG_1875

IMG_1879

After dinner we checked out some silent auction items.

IMG_1882

Thankfully I wasn’t silly enough to bid on this. Although I really really wanted to!

Time to hit the dance floor! Bec grabbed my hand and we were the first up there. SO great.

IMG_1887

IMG_1883

Some dessert to refuel.

IMG_1897

After this the photos (and videos!) take a slight downward turn.

Such a great night. I’m so glad I got to go to the ball one last time…

5 reasons Easter is better than Christmas

IMG_8618

I am a bit too excited about Easter. I can’t help it. It is by far the most superior commercially bastardised religious holiday. Here’s why:

1. It’s less stressful

The things I like about Christmas: food, trees, decorations and alcohol. Aside from those, Christmas to me feels a bit like doomsday. You have to rush to the supermarket, buy presents and catch up with EVERYONE before a cut off date. That date being December 25. Then on December 25 you often have to schlep from house to house and feel guilty about the family you aren’t seeing. There is always the chance of family flare ups and cracking from the sheer pressure of making the day perfect. No thanks. Also I hate the gift giving thing and actually wrote a blog post about it before Christmas last year, but I never published it for fear people would think I’m a Scrooge. Well the truth is out. I’m a scrooge.

Easter on the other hand, has all the delicious food and drinks without the expectations (or presents). How perfect.

2. Chocolate

IMG_8634

Solid Easter eggs are God/Cadbury’s gift to us all. The varieties of chocolate eggs are endless AND you have free reign to eat them for at least a week before and after Easter. You can also get really creative with chocolate Easter themed desserts. Last year I made hot cross bun bread and butter pudding, creme egg brownies and chocolate eggs stuffed with cheesecake. This year I think I’m going to make a creme egg cheesecake.

IMG_8623

3. Hot cross buns

I feel like part of the excitement of HCBs has been diminished by the fact you can now buy them on January 1. However, they are still so damn good. They smell incredible and again, with so many varieties there are options for people who aren’t into sultanas: chocolate, fruit-less or apple anyone? I can’t say I’ve ever been tempted to bake my own, even though there is a strong tradition of doing so in my family. One day maybe.

4. It’s cooler (generally, in Australia)

Christmas smacks Australia in the face with the force of a thousand suns. And still we persist with our roast meats and oven baked desserts. Sweaty. But Easter is generally a more cosy time of the year. I have fond memories of camping over the Easter long weekend as a kid and freezing overnight in my sleeping bag before getting up and being greeted with eggs in brightly coloured foil near my tent. The days would be sunny and crisp and we would try (and fail) at melting our chocolate eggs near the campfire. Bliss.

5. You can opt out

Christmas, I imagine, must be a lonely time for people who for whatever reason choose not to celebrate. But with Easter, there is absolutely no expectation to attend a social gathering, a dinner, a lunch or a church. For many it’s just an awesome 4 days off work, and that’s great. Christmas could certainly learn a thing or two from its perceived lesser cousin, Easter.

Are you sold on Easter yet? What are your plans?

Super easy dhal recipe

IMG_2950

This recipe is super simple, delicious, cheap and can be made from ingredients found in most pantries. What’s not to love?

You will need:

2 cloves of garlic, crushed (or use the one from a jar)
red chillis, as many as you like
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon garam masala
1/2 teaspoon ground tumeric
1 cup of dried red lentils
2 teaspoons of powdered vegetable stock
4 cups of water
1 tomato

Basically just cube the tomato, cut up the chilli and put everything in a pot and bring to the boil. Then simmer for 30 minutes or until most of the water has been absorbed and you’re left with a nice thick stew.

Garnish with coriander and extra chilli if you need more heat. You’re left with a big, healthy bowl of comforting lentils for not much effort.

What are your go-to easy dinners?

I got nothin’

Oh hi. Remember me? It’s been a while, this I what I look like:

IMG_4743

It was windy yesterday

I have nothing of interest to blog about at the moment, perhaps you’ve noticed? The dreaded bloggers’ block.

After the initial excitement of resigning at work and finally being able to tell people about The Big Trip, I’ve fallen back into the mundane of every day living and travel is still a very long 5 weeks away.  Someone told me it’s much harder to keep going when you can see the finish line, which is so true.

So here’s an update of all the truly mundane things (feel free to switch off now):

Irresponsible dieting (Mum don’t read this)

I have a ball to attend on Saturday night and two weeks ago this occurred to me:

I still had not got around to settling back into a reasonable diet and exercise routine after the so-called silly season. So I’ve had no choice but to employ a rather unorthodox (read: stupid) diet in order to fit into my dress. I do not recommend this. I’ve been scrolling through Pinterest’s most tantalising baked good recipes, praying for next week to come…

Television

So it appears I am the last person on earth to discover House of Cards, but what of it? It’s an excellent show. I actually asked my boyfriend if we should visit Gaffney when we’re in the States, just so we can see Frank’s electorate. But we have no plans to go to South Carolina, so we won’t be doing that. Also apparently the giant peachoid isn’t there anymore. Sad.

The peachoid in all its glory

Saving money

Is there anything more exciting, more sexy than saving money? I doubt it. I’m still behaving like a Scrooge of the highest order, but I’m used to it now. I no longer feel wracked with guilt saying no to an overpriced pub meal. So that’s good.

Washing

100% up to date with the washing, you will no doubt be pleased to hear. As for other household matters, we have a rental inspection on Monday and unfortunately our backyard looks like a cornfield that had a recent encounter with a spaceship thanks to the pool we had and loved… So it will be interesting to see how that pans out…

Planning

In slightly more exciting news we have begun to plan our South American adventures, but have found flights from LAX to Lima, Peru to have perplexing and long layovers in strange places. Like Boston?! Back to the drawing board.

Tell me the most boring thing about your life at the moment?

5 tips for successfully selling your old stuff

IMG_2388

Clean, ironed and ready to sell

With the Big Trip coming up with alarming speed I’ve been squirreling away money for a while now. I have managed to save about $10,000  in the few months since December. Part of that has come from selling my belongings (although to be fair, most of it has come from good old fashioned saving). I haven’t been successful in getting rid of everything I set out to sell, so I’ve learnt a lot about what to do and what not to do. Here are some tips:

1. Be strategic about where you sell certain things

I have four options; Ebay, a local consignment store, local market/trash and treasure stalls and on ‘for sale’ and ‘buy and sell’ facebook pages.

Ebay is great if you have designer or higher end products that will appeal to a niche audience (for example, living in regional Western Australia, the locals here are unlikely to discern Josh Goot from Camilla and Marc at a trash and treasure market).

I’m very fortunate that my lovely friend Jo does consignment sales at her store and I have made almost $600 from selling clothes there. Her shop is perfect for dresses I want to sell for around the $30-$50 mark. I would never get that much at a market.

I recently made $300 selling my old things at a pre-loved fashion market. I was stoked! At the end of the day I was chatting with other stall holders who were really disappointed at their lack of sales. It was interesting, I had piles and piles of jewellery and pretty much all of it went. The clothes not so much. I think the price point for jewellery (mostly $15 and under) was a lot more attractive to the market goers and I made an effort to display things nicely, with similar items grouped together. Make sure everything is priced before you get there and be prepared to haggle.

Facebook has been a great place to sell homewares and furniture. Most towns and suburbs will have a ‘buy and sell’ facebook page specific to their area, so have a look. I’ve sold a chair, a desk, a mirror and a camera among other things using facebook. Just be careful because this does involve giving your address to strangers.

2. Make your stuff look good

If you’re selling online, make sure your stuff is clean, ironed and photograph it in good light against a neutral background. I would be completely put off buying something if it was covered in cat hair, sitting atop a pile of crumpled clothes with yesterday’s breakfast bowl nearby. I also find it helps to group similar objects together if you’re selling multiple items, for instance I recently got all my silver homewares together and listed them in one go.

At the fashion market, I displayed my jewellery on a white tablecloth, silver grouped with silver, neon with neon, gold with gold etc. A lot of people commented on how eye catching it was and came over to have a look even if they weren’t initially interested in jewellery.

SAMSUNG CSC

A local photographer took this snap as I was arranging my jewellery at the market. Excuse the chipped nail polish.

3. Make it easy for buyers

People aren’t going to want to sift through piles of clothes on a table at a market. Buy or borrow a clothes rack and avoid putting things like shoes and bags on the ground where they will be missed completely.

Put dimensions, measurements and detailed descriptions on furniture that you aim to sell online. Be sure to mention if the item you are selling has any marks, scratches or dents.

Make sure you have a float with plenty of small change at the markets. I took a mix of small notes and coins to the value of $80 with me and even this wasn’t enough!

4. Lower your expectations

Unfortunately, you’re never going to get all or even most of your money back on used goods. That’s just the way it is. People are looking for bargains. Most of the clothes I had at the market were probably slightly overpriced, but knowing I had other options to sell them later I wasn’t desperate to get rid of them. One woman bought three items from me (two silk tops and a blazer) and knew she was getting a bargain at the prices I set, another was happy to pay $30 for an almost new parka. Others were only keen to spend $10 and under.

So just be realistic about the prices you set or at least be prepared to go lower. But at the same time, if you are adamant something is worth a certain amount, hold your ground. Otherwise it’s not worth the regret later. I sold an instant film camera recently and was not prepared to go under $50. So I just waited and eventually the right buyer came along. But don’t do this for everything!

5. Sit back and watch the cash fly in

I honestly couldn’t think of a fifth tip… Except that if you are saving for something, put the cash you make straight into the bank to avoid the temptation of spending it. I have a piece of paper pinned to my cubicle at work with my goal $ on it and add to it every time I transfer money into savings. It’s weirdly addictive and keeps me on track.

In a few weeks I will have the ultimate challenge of selling my car… Wish me luck!
