The Red Shoes

When I was little, my Grandmother took me to the ballet production of The Red Shoes. Based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, the ballet version tells the tragic story of a young ballerina who dances herself to death in a pair of crimson pointe shoes. In a rather gruesome twist in the fairy tale, Karen’s feet get hacked off with an axe and continue to dance around as punishment for her selfishness and vanity. Whichever version you prefer, there’s no denying the allure of red shoes.

That’s why, when I saw this pair on sale at Betts for $30, I snapped them up in a heartbeat. I’m hoping they’re not cursed…

DIY ombre manicure

I love ombre nails. Simply add white to any colour (I used red) and voila! I think I’ll do purple next. Inspiration:

Travel Tuesdays: Rome

This is a big call, but I think Rome is my favourite European city. Yes, I said it. The food, the weather, the architecture, the ancient ruins around every bend… I loved every second of my Roman Holiday. I also met two lovely ladies Adrienne and Steph whom I caught up with again in Paris. But more than anything I miss eating gelato every day…

Rose Byrne at the SAG Awards

If someone had told me last week Rose Byrne would show up at the Screen Actors Guild Awards wearing a sequined white jump-suit, donning a Michelle Pfeiffer-circa-Scarface-bob I’d have slapped them silly.

What a babe.

Talk about nailing it.

DIY Metal Belt

I love this. A Pair & A Spare taught me how to do it.

You will need a sheet of aluminium flashing (found in the roof section of your hardware store), a hammer, scissors and some wire, rope or thick string.
1 Fold over the sharp edge and flatten with a hammer
2 Cut to desired thickness, plus a little extra for folding (this will ruin your scissors)
3 Fold and flatten with a hammer
4 Fold along the short edges and secure with adjustable wire

Being Frida

On Saturday night I went to a Mexican party dressed as Frida Kahlo. She is awesome. By the end of the night the monobrow really started to grow on me (not literally).

Hardware Store Rings

The hardware store is a veritable jewellery goldmine. Obviously.

$1 – $2 each. They remind me of part of the Egyptian exhibition at The Met in NYC;

The Egyptians were definitely the chicest of the ancient civilisations.

Lunch.

Burrito lettuce cups! Have you ever seen anything so ingenious?!

I came up with the idea all by myself*.

DIY silver rope & copper coupling necklace

Again with the hardware store specials. I had every intention of doing a proper outfit post (haven’t done one in ages) but by the time I got everything together the clouds had rolled-in rendered the sky a deep, angry grey. So here’s some DIY instructions and what I would have worn this necklace with- blue denim, a nude/pink blazer and white silk shirt (and perhaps some shoes).

For this necklace I used:
– Silver/Blue curtain cord (just over 1 metre) from a craft store
– Copper Capillary Couplings (straight 15mm) from Bunnings Warehouse
– Masking tape & a hot glue gun, also from Bunnings

So how was your weekend?

This weekend I:

– made an elaborate photo collage of my manicure
– bought 6 pieces  of jewellery for $10 at Diva
– cooled-off in a paddle pool while admiring my neon orange toe nail polish
– met G and Brendan’s rabbit, Baby Grey
– was encouraged to post an early morning face photo on instagram
– tried not to spend next weeks pay on neon yellow accessories
– watched a show in which a doctor swaps the diet of a morbidly obese person with the diet of an underweight person- with hilarious consequences
– made some jewellery

I also:

– slept in
– Fell asleep during Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
– Had to leave movie night because I ‘don’t do’ scary movies
